Contemplations, observations and 30 winds

It is the first poetic work of a young writer, Maria Fernandes.

The title of this work where does takes us? What is its meaning?
Maria Fernandes: Part of the work that is integrated in this book has to do with a collection of a blog, "obtuse winds" that I maintain since 2011 I chose this title because it would be representative of content, are 3 different series of texts, which has also to do with my poetic process, by capturing concepts of the environment, the everyday. It is the internal transformation of those concepts that comes out here in the form of language, using the word. Hence comtemplations, to see what this around, but notice several details of the various scenes that are seen. All this can lead to a process that is transformed whichever feels inside me and then there are the findings, which is a kind of result of what is contemplated. Finally, the 30 winds, are the thirty texts, accompanied by the concept of wind, as the surrounding environment in which we live.

What inspires you when writing? A poet struggles to be able to write or not?
MF: It is not required, you can write a very sad text, if you want to designate it this way, being happy. It is above all the ability to distance yourself from someone to do this, there is a separation between the pain and the work. What inspires me? Can be so much, I can walk down the street and create a poem mentally. There is nothing in particular that inspire me, as I said in my particular case, is a capture of concepts of the environment.

30 texts you published on the "obtuse winds." But, what led you to start this blog?
MF: It was a group of friends who drove me to publish the blog. I've been writing since adolescence, but there was a hiatus for several years did not write and there was a time that inspired by various cultural activities and the readings I've always done, I returned to writing. And then, my friends began to tell me, why not share? And that was when I created the "obtuse winds."

Your poems tell stories or not?
MF: They can tell stories or not. And can say one thing, or say nothing. I like to leave everything open, when I write any significance. I like the ambiguity for the reader as to which there is also a diversity of concepts that can be assigned to that text. I know when I'm writing what I'm trying to say, but maybe people can understand it differently. Meanings may be different, I should not write poetry to tell stories, not to serve it, but it serves to express something.

In your poems do a tribute to other writers, why?
MF: I imagine that will be writers who have influenced me in some way, or have some feature of my personal life, or literary work that has to do with something that I am writing at the time.

You think we are a motherland of women poets?
MF: I would not put things in the genre. What I can say is that Portugal is a country of poets traditionally, do not know if will be of women poets, but what I feel is that there was some stagnation during some time in our country, more specifically in Madeira, that is the reality I know. And in recent years there has been an explosion, there is a lot of people writing, maybe one day there are more people writing than reading.
