It is a novel by the same author of "City of God" , Paulo Lins .
This is a portrait of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the early twentieth century. Of its peculiar urban fabric since, revolves around a loving trio, in one of the city's slums, accoimpaned by samba sounds, the music of choice . The characters are rich and interesting, there is a bit of everything , from the pimp, the prostitute, the drunk, singer, the indolent and the worker, all in a very fast pace and rogue in terms of writing. Paulo Lins masterfully captures the life of a marginalized society, we are, in essence, familyrize wih this representation thanks to the Brazilian soap operas, but this is more raw, without any subterfuge. The only difficulty, perchance, the reader may face is the language, the slang used by some of the characters, I confess, I had some difficulty in decoding it. Moreover, " since samba is samba " is one of those books that deserves to be read and enjoyed for those who want to know a bit of the real Brazil. Have a nice reading.
