The dawn of paula

Written by  yvette fts Guto Costa

Paula Fernandes is one of the most recognized female voices of sertaneja music outside Brazil. The singer recently released the album "Dawn" which is another milestone in her full career of successes.

How the album "Dawn" distinguish it self from your remaining discographic work?
Paula Fernandes: In all my work I have always tried to bring, besides the romantic backcountry, which is a mark of my journey in music, something more danceable and up. On the album "Dawn", which won DVD in late September, it has some variations in style, as the xote, for example.

What determined the choice of themes that were included on this CD?
PF: Always seek the truth in my songs and I say that the songs choose me. Assemble a repertoire is always very difficult, but I am very attentive to my audience, I try to bring to them what makes them happy too. "Dawn" brings a great mix of rhythms and invites the public to get involved and participate.

You compose many of your songs, because of your experience in shows and as a singer, there is something that has changed over time in this creative process to compose for an album?
PF: Today I'm much more mature, so I understand that my music has changed too. There is no recipe for composing the music comes without exact time.

In terms of melody is different composing for sertaneja music or not?
PF: The root is sertanejo, I grew up in this environment and I'm very proud to be part of it. Between genres I think there is no difference in the composition, but there is the writing process, each artist has his and is very private.

You participate in many duets, what does it matter to you as a singer?
PF: The meetings and partnerships with other artists are always extremely enriching experiences, I like so much this dynamic that for the DVD recording "Dawn" made sure to personally invite people that I admire in music, Sandy and Pablo Lopez, are icons generations and that somehow influence on my music.

Is there any albums that set you better as a songwriter?
PF: My career in music and every album released is a great maturity as a songwriter, it's hard to name just one album that defines me best. This new project, " Dawn," I can say that is the picture of everything I planted at the beginning of my career and I am very happy to reap positive results now.

The sertaneja music normally is best known for its male singers, it was more difficult to be accepted as a singer in this enviroment?
PF: The sertaneja music is known for its rather large male idols who were pioneers and had been exploring the genre, but always alongside with female names, which now represent a very strong movement in the backcountry and stand out in Brazil. We had proof of that with Barretos rodeo the largest in Latin America, which I was extremely happy to be part of and had among its attractions a big part are women.

In live shows, you always play the guitar, at this point in your career when you could have a musician why playing?
PF: The violão and the guitar are my instruments, I have a beautiful band, accompanying me for some time, but never stop playing my instruments for at least a moment of the show.

What would you say to a young singer and songwriter who is beginning in a competitive market as is Brazil?
PF: Never give up your dreams. Persist in what you believe and surely you will prevail.
