Study of global clima in the Azores

The United States and the Government of the Azores signed an agreement that will allow the creation of a weather station on the island of Graciosa

The U.S. Department of Energy will build a weather infrastructure on the island of Graciosa. The University of the Azores is the privileged partner in this international project that will help monitor and understand climate change occurring in the Atlantic. The new premises, which should be completed in July of next year, will collect information that scientists say will help in "understanding and prediction of the climate system due to the lack of credible information and collected over a considerable period of time, from several points the globe.
The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) project, will initially move into two new points of climate observation, in a Olitok Point, at Alaska and another in the Graciosa. Scientists have identified the need to obtain information from these regions to assess and improve the simulations of the climate on a global scale as well as sensitive areas in climatic terms. Measurements of the new observation points will study the interaction between clouds and aerosols in these regions and how this is impacting on the planet.
The Azores join the network already on the ground by the ARM project globally. There are already several local weather stations in the U.S., Australia, Papua New Guinea and even some mobile units for observation in other parts of the world. Each infrastructure includes nearly two dozen instruments that monitor various elements of climate such as clouds, aerosols, radiation, precipitation, and solar thermal energy and basic components of weather, "as quoted on the text of the link of the university .
