It is a film about Lucian Prodan, a young Moldovian who discovers the sea, friendship and surf in Portugal. A positive story about learning and the inner growing of a foreign boy in Portuguese lands. A documentary by Maria Eça, Miguel Bretiano and Vasco Crespo, who has won awards and honors at the national and international level .

How did the idea of the film begin on Lucian?
Maria Eça: We already had in mind to make a film in the documentary field, because the three of us work in television. At the same time we were talking about it, we decided that we didn't need a big project, would be the first, and then came the story of Lucian. Miguel is a regular beach goer of St. Peter and knew João who was the instructor of the local surf school. Told him the story of a kid who walked around the beach and wanted to surf, who did not speak Portuguese very well, and that the beach was adopting him and help him surfing. Struck our fancy a kid like that, who apparently had a funny personality that pulled people and they began to build the history. Before we met his mother and ask her permission to make the film and to film him, because he is a minor and we were just cling to her, because in the film you can also realizes that the lady is very outgoing and friendly. We started to realize beyond this little story, there was another that was even greater the integration of Lucian in the Portuguese community, through the surf. He learns to speak Portuguese, swim and surf in just three months.

I know you struggled with the lack of financial means. Still had some help to make this documentary. But what were the challenges you faced during the shooting?
Miguel Bretiano: In addition to the shortage of funds, the other challenge is trying to coordinate us, we have our daily work and we had to combine our schedules to work on this project. It was a film that required four months of recording, the rest was not too hard, the way we were received in "Surf in Portugal " as in the family of Lucian was all so spontaneous on their part , which made our job much easy. Maybe it's one of the secrets of this film, the spontaneity, the pleasure of doing it and how we were welcomed by everyone.

Vasco Crespo: It's running away from our working environment, the information environment that we do, out of this mental print of almost daily news situation for a documentary. The biggest challenge was personal in the sense that we were going to tell a story in a more documentary way and that was our biggest difficulty, detach of this logic of Television thinking and move to something more cinematic.
ME: For example, this film has no narration, it tells himself.

There is evidence for a second movie.
MB: Not quite a second film, this is a project that does not end in these twelve years of Lucian. This is just the beginning. For surely will get it or not, depends on time. We will continue to accompany him, we do not know what will happen, he can go and then the connection will be more difficult, but we will try to accompany him. Whether there will be another film only time will tell.

This film has gone through various festivals, which is the feedback from the people?
ME: I think that nobody is indifferent to the history of Lucian. The simplicity of it, while he is a humble person is also a young man with great determination, that is the beautiful side and I think that goes for anyone who sees the film. I always keep that on me, the answer that gives the end of the interview, when I ask: do you want to be a professional surfing? And he answered: I do, but I want to learn first. This summarizes what is Lucian, that blonde boy with a funny face and fluffy, people get stuck on him, but it's his personality that passes thru and that is there. The film has a year and a half and has been in huge festivals , he came down to Madeira , has been interviewed by several Portuguese television , but remains the same , hurry things he has to do, but what he wants is to go surfing. I think no one can remain indifferent to Lucian. First is this, get passionate about Lucian and then there is: he does not go away, does he? He stays in Portugal?

MB: I just want to add that we had some surprises along the way, when we won the festival in Singapore which is a completely different audience than we are used to and when we went to Moldova, the way we were greeted in his homeland, in the documentary festival. The way we approached the story was strange to them, because they are not used to this kind of recording. I do not remember the question that I was asked.

VC: What do they put in question was: why did you not explore the socio- economic side of the story? His parents are immigrants and suffer the problems inherent in migration and integration. We face a room full of people eager to get more information and knowledge, i.e. a country that is opening to the west and then Miguel said: we are not so interested in that side of economic and social history we wanted child, always in a more positive point of view, without having to stress out the economic difficulties, or such interpretations. The room was moved and applauded. It's an answer as simple as this.
People want stories.
MB: And the fact positive story.
VC: This was perhaps the first approach we took in this direction. The Moldovan public even asked us to continue to tell the story , which was a funny thing , of asking us if we wanted to go to the house of his grandparents , they provide the camera equipment , car , food , whatever it took to continue to tell this story .

After all these experiences, these testimonies, I want you to tell me what this movie brought you personally?
MB: For me it is the beginning of what we want to do all three together. It is a humbling experience for us as well , those words that Mary emphasized about Lucian : I want to learn first , is also what we are doing , we learn to build a project that we support , do more and we will not take it for granted.

ME: Following the logic of Michael and trying not to repeat, I think there is no excuse for not doing things, can be done.

VC: For now I have to make a public thanks to Mary and Vasco for this project, first of all. After, they have had the ability to convey that it is possible to do this. Maybe of the three I was the least believer of all, if it was a viable project or not, if we could make a documentary that at least entered a festival. The initial intention was to participate in the film festival Ericeira and the film went much further, that one we won and other's came after. We have an immense credit and I think Miguel and Maria made me believe that we can be better.
