The upalalas

Written by

It is an online radio made by Nuno, the Elson, Mane, Noel and many more for a global world that speaks Portuguese. They are all very young, friendly, gorgeous and full of energy to bring you a truly special transmission. They are professionals who create innovative content to keep the audience glued to them and ensure the dream of a project that they do not want left to die.

How did you come out with that name?
Nuno Timoteo: It's almost a secret. It's a funny story, but we cannot disclose it. The point is to draw attention and stay in the ear.

How did the radio?
NT: It started with me and Elson. I was in Port FM and Elson was a listener who then began working as a designer in the program. Later we realized we were both Madeira then started talking about the net. The Upalala radio started without we met personally, we had no means of transport so that we can meet. The first time we've seen each other I was drunk. Elson had created a blog called Upalala and called me the attention, because it was about an exam that was taking a long time and came up with the idea of radio. I left Port FM to initiate this project, the first edition took place on December 4th if 2008 and the site came after.
Who are your listeners? I realized they are very interactive.
NT: Here in Madeira can go from 14 years to 25 years old. If in England or another country are older because they are mostly migrants. From South Africa, Angola and Brazil mostly. We can see from our statistics and there is some contact through the chat.
Elson Ponte: We have many Brazilians that listen to us, but most are from England. The site is in Portuguese and they hear it.
NT: It happened to me in July a ridiculous situation, a colleague of mine who I had not seen in years began to hear me, did not recognize me by the voice and eventually found my name on our web page. Then we started talking again and he told me he listened to the radio for some time and had a bar and put the radio on for the British clients.

But how all this works, each one has a mixer at home?
EP: It goes without it. We make the program from home, as long the computer has a quality microphone, Nuno is a mixer that puts one channel for each person and from that moment we are able to go on air. He has software that we used to talk over the internet, i.e., it receives the audio and sends it all from his home. When we put the air the 4Litro program, they are not in our studio, everything is done from their home, they talk and we put in the air from our equipment.
Manuel Vasconcelos: If you have someone to do a story on the street, Nuno is in his studio and then we establish the connection. We speak with people to include them in the radio emission. We are live all the time. The rally in Porto Santo was always done this way for a week straight. I was on the island and turned out to be possible. That was last year. The connection is made through Skype, you can do all this and even video calling. We have open chat.
NT: The main studio is in my house, and then from the server they can connect. I get it via Skype and I can mix the program.
EP: People can also interact from their webcam and we can interview them from the chat. A studio brings many fixed costs, we have to physically go there and have equipment for everyone. Thus, it is not necessary. Nuno organizes everything from his home and we just have to talk to him. We were able to Skype in a way with much more quality. We faced some complications of hardware at this point can be made the programming as well, however there are limitations, like echoes of people talking and when you have music on the PC, we hear it all. We also hear the noise of people on the street, as happens in a normal studio. Technology helps a lot.

Everything is done through a server only for radios?
EP: We have a server just to radio online, and then we have another set of Upalala just to put the songs, which is what Nuno does and use our computers. One of the applications of smart phones is Skype; we have achieved through a hi-fi network, connect our four phones at the same time and make the program with the phones thru the Internet. Some are on the computer, others with the smart phones and get them to join it.
MV: I do direct interviews thru a smart phone and if you checked the TV does the same through the hotspots, the voice may even be delayed in relation to the image, but it's all possible now through the phones and new technologies to make a radio program with quality.

How the current team came together?
EP: We have created for this purpose a website where people can apply, accepted designers and other staff to do radio. Those who come to us and want to enter this world we shared what little knowledge we have. It has many duds; some go away and then went back again. It's too much work they say. We received a lot of applications, but when they kwon the project they think is too much and is indeed so, for what we demand, because they have to choose a time, checked availability with the DJ and we need to work on the server, they must know we can move in terms of music and what cannot be deliver, how they can speak. That's all worked.
You still do not earn anything with this?
EP: We are all studying. In the near future we intend to professionalize.

There are many radio stations like yours?
EP: With the size of ours, no. There were plenty before, but then came the licensing and cost-functions as a bubble spend much money on equipment and then you don't an immediate return. There was Porto FM, where Nuno and I started at the moment and it disappeared.
VM: The pirate sites tend to disappear. Now everything is dot.com or dot. PT and you have to pay the copyright. We do this; we paid all the contents on the page that allows us to deliver music. Before that it was not necessary, a year ago. That's why few remaining radio stations are online. Maybe two or three.
EP: We paid to an entity depending on the number of listeners, if we have more we paid more. It is beneficial, but for example, we got a fright with the values of licensing, in the end is very good when we have this kind of spending requires us to act more professional. Of course, many will be gone in particular in these times of crisis, not everyone can keep their projects.

How many listeners do you have?
EP: We don't have the exact number. On average, depends on the days of the program 4Litros lasting half an hour, has 200 entries.
EP: The radio network was born out of a net, a car site who was born a month ago, we have a page of social media is more news on the internet and social networks is growing internationally and we take this opportunity to do it at a national level, through Upalala.net. We found that the network has more feedback and make a program from it. We disclose everything and groups are made in order to have a good content to reach listeners and readers. We have more projects in mind, but it must grow.

What is the future of Upalala?
NT: I usually say that Upalala is a school, we want to give an opportunity for those who cannot enter other radio stations, make this show a work spaces. DJ's, broadcasters, bloggers or designers who want to show their project. We are not profit from this fact, comes out of our pocket and everything is done with good will. If I break some equipment is Noel that does the maintenance. (Laughs)
EP: First I want to finish the course, and then think about it seriously.

Do you edit programs?
NT: We have very few recorded programs. Our bet is always live which puts more responsibility on broadcasters and if it happened, happened, is what God wants. In the program of 4Litros swearing and something goes wrong I cannot do anything because it's live, it's out. Already happened to me and Mane to be live unwittingly, I was commenting: this girl is really cute and she was listening. The microphone was connected and it happens. The mornings are heavy. We have many ideas, but do not want to even talk about them in order to be copy. What do we do? We put the first program in the air, might not even have an impact, but now no one cannot say that the idea is theirs, because we have been copied in the past.
MV: This kind of surprises happens often in radio, with 4Litro is a constant because it is always fun. Nobody takes it badly and the audiences are theirs.

Nuno, as the announcer you must fascinated girls?
EP: Just see his changing status on facebook to realize that he is the great lover of the group. (Laughs)
NT: My last two girlfriends came thru the radio.

They still listened to you?
NT: They still hear me, but I'm committed now. My current girlfriend I meet her as a DJ, because of the chat. One of my great loves of my life was at the expense of the radio.
EP: I can also confirm that all members, who had never had girlfriends before, managed to have them through the radio.

I note that there are few girls on the team.
NT: That's why many drop out because of the boyfriends. They begin to be known by Upalala and there is a strong interaction thru facebook and the chat and that creates problems and they end up leaving.
