In dry land

Written by

Mario laginha is an unavoidable name of Portuguese music, he is not limited to jazz. proof of this is his last record, as the author, " dry land ", which explores other musical terrain, but not only. It is a must to experience that always accompanies him on everything he does and who he does it .

In this latest work you adds an instrument, the Portuguese guitar, which is something unusual on your records.
Mario laginha : The challenge was that. It is an instrument that I like, but it's a little quirky, gives some things that other instruments do not give and vice versa. I wanted me to experience the Portuguese guitar for a universe away from their place of comfort , it was fado, and met a great guitarist who is also a person who is attracted by experimentation, by challenges. After a while I invited him for a trio, he accepted and that's how it all began .

Having a long career as a musician , why now having this experience?
ML: Because the person appeared, the problem is that there are fantastic guitarist, but are not available to get out of your comfort zone, this has nothing of critical, but Miguel Amaral felt very tempted to try other things and I found the right person, someone who had to lend itself to that.

How was the process of playing together. Was difficult or not really?
ML : We've known each other. We had played together in a number of Ricardo Pais , the " shadows " and had realized he had huge potential. Knowing a bit the guitarist and had worked with him I knew it was easy to establish that relationship. One of the very important things in a musical project is to feel good about who you're playing with, and Michael is that kind of person. He was a huge help, because when I was composing the music had to ask him if wht I was writing was possible or not in Portuguese guitar and he was instrumental in this process, leading me to go. It was like: this chord only if so, do you want it ? I do wanted it ! ( laughs ) .

This written of almost entirely album is done by you, except one song, why you included it?
ML: Because it is so. This is a theme with the allure of the writing something for this trio, who had something classical and the idea of escape. I thought the entire record for pulling another side to the universe of this trio, ie I think the sound is fuller somehow with this theme.

This work had a lot of you and a memory Bernando Sassetti .
ML: Absolutely. I did basically an author album, after the death of Bernardo and how he was a musician with whom I shared not only the stage, in many other projects, we recorded together, had fun together and I feel I really miss him and it is perhaps the first person in my universe that I lost and I was not expecting, so I wanted to devote it him this record .

Why dry land ? Musically is drier ?
ML: No, I wanted it to be a metaphor . I imagined a dry land , an area where there are few people , is sparsely populated and to be able to live in it you need anything for that land becomes fertile and I thought it was beautiful the idea of a musical universe that was not very populated. I do not like to say I did something that no one ever did, because it is never like that, someone always did something similar, I thought it was little explored and I used it .

Just as we were talking before we recognized your work in a duo with Maria João and you told me that you going back together.
ML: We never stop being a duo, what we have done is go beyond the projects we do together. We are going to Southern Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa and Brazil in May. Now, she has other things, as I have. And so made people think we stopped playing together, but not.

After this tour you plan to record a new album ?
ML: We made an album a year and a half ago, not yet two. I think this season and having made 14 albums together, the pace may not be equal. We did an album a year and I think now might not be the same, but we will do more .

You participated in many musical projects, among them musicians with less experience, even very young. Like to take this risks ?
ML: It attracts me to venture into different things that I have never experienced. I like a lot in terms of music, classical , jazz, pop and rock, and of course I cannot do everything, but occasionally if I think I can get close to other areas and are enriching experiences that attracts me doing. There is a third side in your question, what attracts me is not playing with big names, I like to play with musicians who I respect and may be known or unknown complete, if I like them and think they are great musicians have to go.

And the project with André Fernandes ?
ML: Andre is an incredible musician and has what is very important I think in a musician, there are some but not many, his music has a face, an identity, that is it. If I hear one of his songs in the car, not knowing that it is his, I'm sure I recognize it. He invited me to this project and I accepted immediately, there is no doubt and I'm delighted .

Looking back on your career that is already long and successful there is still something you would like to do and never done?
ML : I hope many ( laughs ) I never looked at the future of a closed form, creating goals that are sealed. In the sense that from the moment I decided to do it is solved , one of the things that I find charming in music and art is the diversity, this side of life to be alive, to go and taste. There are many things I still did not know what I'll do , but not knowing is fascinating, because the world is in constant motion, people show up, and music also changes. When something fascinates me as soon it appears I have the idea to try .
