What did you felt when the CD was rejected by music record companies?
NM: In the beginning, we were not in the middle of the industry and much less accustomed to meetings with music gurus. We knew it was something that was not done here in Portugal, we realize and they (music business), understood that it was a sound that was not to beat here, but in the U.S. at the time. We, on the other hand, thought it was appropriate, and more important that we liked so we had the support of our friends, who at first was very important. When we were playing they accompanied us and believed in our work. This was very important for us; we did an edition for them. There were about a thousand CDs at the time; all done for us and thankfully that was it.
Love is magical burst with great force in the charts. It was this theme that has become more known?
NM: Yes, but we'd had it with the second disc, the expensive soul and the theme of the thirteen women. It was played a lot; we had about 50 concerts that year. We could tell by that success what was coming in our way. Now, there is never certainty. Ten years later, returned with this record companies and they told us the same thing. And once again we knew what we had, we are not stupid and we like what we do, the rest comes later. We decided to do it again.
Demo: I remember a situation in the second disc, the issue of recording was not raised. We feel that if it was worked, might work, but it was not. So, in my opinion at the beginning, we should give another chance to EMI, I insisted. We went. Once we realize how everything worked in this third album even though we had gone back to record companies, because we feel that there could be someone who could believe in our music, it could be an asset, we decided to do it all over again alone. Above all you must believe.
NM: You must also have a major investment. And we knew that it was more or less like the second disc, once again had to be us. So we gathered various people working in this area and that did get expensive soul and to the press everywhere. The radios really complain that record companies do not send their drives, so they do not get it. So we did this work, we knew where they failed and we are very satisfied and the result could not be better.
Yes, it is in sight.
Demo: We are living in utopia. Because love is magical only begins to succeed six months after the album released. Begun to reach people in September, which happens this time? People from that until now they somehow prevent the release of another single and are it's very difficult, because love is magical cannot get out of the air play. We have launched "I'll give you anything" is our second single and it's on and only been a year and a half after, because it is hard to throw it. Love is the music is still magical. What is very gratifying for us? Mostly, it is very satisfying and believes that things can happen in a way, even if you have a great promotional machine behind the music speaks louder. And this is one of the things on which I reflect a lot.
That's what they thought when you wrote this song?
NM: We never wrote songs to think about success. We write to think of us, we must love it first.
Demo: It's all relative, you do not know if the single will succeed or not.
What inspires you?
NM: In the beginning we are inspired by what we heard, American music. It came the time; we started working on our material only. Twelve years have passed since we started, have a lot of us, and are not this or that.
Demo: If you do a search and I don't know if you did it anyway. I still hear the three discs and you know that we can hear an evolution in our voices and as people.
Yes, it shows a lot on this third album, Utopia, the choirs, there are a number of instruments that work well in conjunction.
Demo: I'll give you an example. Max has a background in music. I have strictly none. I grew up here, completely. I owe everything to music. I confess to you that when you were young did not even know I wanted to do. Going right or left. And the music gave me this, a joie de vivre. Regardless of success. It's good. We created a connection, one with the band's ambition to do better. Go further. Mainly, singing in Portuguese, which has always been our struggle. At twelve years ago we made the decision that was to sing in our language. Writing 35 lyrics must be in Portuguese and we are doing a lot of force for Portuguese music.
On stage, you are a force of nature and create a great empathy with the public. It is so huge that you participate in festivals.
NM: It has to be, we have to give our best. Our music is perfect for this type of event. The burning of the tapes, in which the public is still more excited because of alcohol. (Laughs)
Demo: But because of that, we are not limited, this year we did two acoustic concerts.
How was that experience?
NM: It turned out to be spectacular. It was all a show with everyone with their arms in the air; we also had to get up because I could not be seated.
Demo: It was the emotion. At this stage we decided to do something more intimate. Another guise. We cannot be limited. And I confess that for me was much more intimate and more difficult.
Why?
Demo: On the biggest stage we see something growing. There is eye to eye. Learn to handle things differently. Feel the lyrics otherwise. It is very positive. This year really is one in which we feel happier and more complete.
Next step.
NM: These and next year we are just doing gigs. We are doing different things, we cannot yet reveal. We have insights and wrote some music.
