The eletrustic

Written by

Is a musical project, led by Paulo Gouveia , which is a fusion between jazz , electronic music and the repercussions . A unique and unusual experience that results from ongoing improvised dialogue between musicians and despite the audience's applause it ended , left the "best of 2014 " to listen and be amazed .

When eletrustic arise ?
Paulo Gouveia : In June 2013, was a proposal a friend of ours Paulo Lima , from the freshmoods , they asked us to create something within the jazz improvisation , which is an area me and João Correia, the trumpeter , we are more connected. We wanted to do something different, outside the usual and tried to bring electronic music to improvisation, or vice versa , depends on how you look at it. What happened was some concerts, a trio with João on the trumpet and Juan Pestana across the keys,
the digital area, samplying light and other tools. For me, I'm a drummer , I tried to look for some different sounds far appart from the instruments I use. We tried to meet electronic music , with the concept of jazz improvisation . The project eventually gain a larger view than Portugal and end it not happenning, because Juan will leave the country and will play out for a few years , then this will be our last concert . By the end of the month we will have available our album, which will be called "the best of 2014 ."

It is the first EP that throw ?
PG: Yes.

But how did the musical selection if it is done on the basis of improvisation ? Record every concert ?
PG : Yeah, we recorded improvisation sessions and chose certain tracks to compilled on a record , if that's what you might call it.

What you have to take into consideration to select certain musical moments , what the others had not ?
PG : Improvisation as any kind of dialogue have happiest heights, others less , although we function under some patterns that are programmed and tried always select an environment where we noticed that things worked better, and this process is still ongoing . But it is a very exciting project in that sense, work on improvisation in different environments, to which jazz musicians are not use to, such as house music , drummer bass, and even other languages with the same root, but have another reputation nowadays. People are use to listen Dj's , doing their work and think what transpired in this project was to fascinate viewers in that sense, seeing how things are played, in which the sounds are not all adulterated. This has also been a fascination for me, searching for sounds of other universes .

How may themes has the album ?
PG : We are thinking about a hour. Normally we do one set without pause, are not songs or themes, is a journey, what happened there was magical and unique.

When you did your first concert which was the public reaction ? In particular , jazz lovers should have considered almost heresy to mix this kind of sounds normally associated with the disco music.
PG : I think the reaction was very positive , particularly in Madeira , jazz has not yet reached the maturity that already has other stops . People hear normally the standard themes of the American Songbook and jazz is no so today, these songs had their time, continued to be played and rebuilded with new clothes, but the concept of jazz has to do with this statement, with the dialogue. The public response was great , because it's fresh and different, were curious and some mind blown.

At the end of the concert waht did they said ?
PG : That never heard anything like it, congratulate us, often ask the research process sounds . It's delicious to spur people's curiosity. We've had a fantastic time .

So how you do the research these unusual sounds ? The lids of pots or others like it, do not escape a bit of both styles, jazz and electronic music ?
PG : In relation to disco music I do not agree it flees from it, because I did a search to get the sounds I hear that usually are in electronic format. I found them through physical objects, pots , music boxes, different things .

Also has repercussions.
PG : Yes, Duarte brought another interesting component, when it comes to repercussion people think of congas, so he brought boards, an Indian instrument.

So how does this all falls on both fronts ?
PG : I think perfectly. In relation to jazz it fits the way we offer at what 's happening . I think it's a lot, we are here without any prejudice or moral judgment and talk with each other , then call this form of jazz being, in relation to electronic music. I think this is the way things shoud be. For my part I have played sounds with acoustic music, is a great work of research, which not only started with this project a but for a few years and probably in another year it turns out to be better and I develop this concept in another project. The eletrustic is the culmination of several years of musical research .

This need to search is always something that you bring with you?
PG : Yes, when you study music you learn the grammar , but it takes something else , is not only arithmetic. Music for me is much more than that. It is a necessity, it is a personal path and it is my future .

The blend .
PG : Yes , today there is talk of " world music " and it is much more than that , increasingly adapting these small languages and joining them all and make beautiful things with them, that's what we tried to do.

After this experience , what is the next step?
PG : The eletrustic close a cycle with much joy, I do not like to call the last concert , but with this same group we won't play anymore. We may have similar concepts , but that will not call ourselves Eletrustic because this project are these people and how they talk to each other .

Eletrustic why?
PG : It brings together electronic sounds with acoustic.
