Rita, the wonder

Written by

She began her career in jazz music with only 14 years of age. Since then she sings and enchants audiences with her mature and melodious voice. A jazz journey she want to quit, not quite, with a CD which contains all these life experiences and musical influences.

I notice in your songs you're a romantic. You see yourself that way?
Rita Maria: I speak of love and lack of love, loveless (laughs). Yes, I am a true romantic, but there is another side of me that is not exploited, because in addition to this repertoire, I have another facet more abstract, more contemporary and perhaps that is why I am entering the world of heavy rock and themes of the music that I make are changing a little.

You'll leave the jazz?
RM: I do not know. Now I am working in Ecuador, I want to take roots in this country and know their musical traditions. I want to use the Spanish language in what I do and invade other styles too.

How a Portuguese jazz singer does go to Ecuador?
RM: I studied in the U.S., the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There I was in contact with people all over the world and in this context came an invitation to become a teacher. After my stay in this institution, one year later, through a teacher, the opportunity arose to go to Ecuador, because the local university uses the same type of teaching of Berklee.

You'll start teaching?
RM: I've been teaching, now I fell in love the country and everything else (laughs). There is something emotional holding me musically to the Equator and therefore I want to continue.

What do you think of this phenomenon, if we can call it that almost all jazz singers in Portugal are women?
RM: I think it is not only in Portugal. I think the trend of jazz is that the singers are female. It is in general, perhaps in our country is accentuated further because there are few musicians and what stands out most are the female singers as part of the band. Maybe if there were more bassists, pianists and more female drummers you not noticed that much. In this respect we are still evolving, there are now more, I have colleagues who play these instruments, but is not common, it is more usual to see a woman singing.

Tell me about your new discographic work. You want to close a cycle since you are starting again in Ecuador? What you wanted to express?
RM: My record will be recorded in September is an original work of mine who is exactly the close of one cycle since I was 14 years of age when I began to learn and sing jazz and as I do now 27 is time to close that chapter of my life. I have compositions of my colleagues, all contemporary, with my lyrics and some poems by Fernando Pessoa and Eugenio de Andrade in my sleeve. I have a total of seven arranged songs, four themes are mine and the rest are the contributions of colleagues who have written some lyrics to my request for this work. Mainly serves to close this cycle in jazz, although I do not know very well what will be my path, off to something else is always very positive, looking forward and find other influences. Jazz has gave me a lot and continue to give, but I have other horizons, I also include other musical styles.

The work will be sung in Portuguese? Or also in Spanish?
RM: I chose to do it in Portuguese, because it is what I can differentiate me in this area and everything that I learned, that I gathered from my educational influences of jazz and cultural, which is being Portuguese and speak Portuguese. I tried to merge in these record all the more important elements, most memorable of my life as a singer.

You already have a title?
RM: It was something that I have not decided yet. I do not know what to do with the title, I'm not sure, because I may have a song in Spanish and while I was recording this album, I'm already thinking about the next. I'm in a limbo. I will have to do with this aspect of the closing cycle and the beginning of another.
