Beatriz Nunes is a versatile singer who unfolds her voice into different types of music recordings. A balanced journey that she's been building and whose future is expected to be bright, taking into account that she is the new singer in her own right of one of the most iconic bands of the Portuguese music scene, Madredeus.

Your musical registration is erudite; however, you moved by other types of sounds like jazz.
Beatriz Nunes: I am a restless soul, I have many and very different tastes. I began by studying classical music and singing and came to a certain point I felt that was not enough and went looking for jazz , which was something different , but never stopped to shed erudite . Continued simultaneously and this had ramifications for light music and the "world music ". It is true that I have very different tastes.

What brought you jazz that classical music had not vocally?
BN: That question is very pertinent in academics terms I felt that classical music or the learning that I was doing at the time was a Russian pedagogy methodology very conservative, although I had a very good teacher. Jazz has another freedom that I needed and helped me with classical music. In the background are interlinked, the rigor of the scholar with the freedom of jazz.

Tell me then about "bad blood", which is another aspect completely different in musical terms. Why that project?
BN: I really like challenges. The "bad blood" was led by a person whom I care about, a great friend of mine, whom I also recognize an enormous talent, the poet Nuno Moura. He has edited books and won a revelation award a few years ago. At the time he challenged me, it is now more than 3 years, for a different work more underground with a sound almost conceptual. Music meets the word, rather than the opposite. It was amusing to dress a character to carry out the project that was presented live and where I even dress a blonde wig. I really enjoyed it, because I have something of an actress in me.

Yes, but your performance was not only vocal also took part of the project in melodic terms.
BN: Yes, there are two songs which I participated, one of them I did it when I was very young from one of the poems of Nuno. When I was nine I liked to grab books and make music from the poems and made the "congratulations Amalia". I always had this song, recorded it and later Nuno told me to use it now with arrangements. It is a very personal project.

Let us consider your new musical challenge as lead singer of Madredeus, in essence, the new album whose themes were removed from the old group's repertoire, I know that for this album you try not to hear the themes sung by Teresa Salgueiro.
BN: Yes, it's true, I was initially tempted to listen it, but quickly I realized it was a too big a risk. The interpretations are so strong and fantastic, many of them I already knew, and I realized that if I continued down this path would be influenced. I had to look at these scores as if they were classical pieces. So I was lucky to only look at the music written text and made my interpretation. It is a musical sheet in raw and I took those notes to my interpretation, of course, with much of the help from Pedro Aires.

And how did you feel on your first concert as lead singer of Madredeus, because there was a big responsibility.
BN : I remember perfectly the day April 14th, 2012 in Caldas da Rainha , I never will forget, because I was so nervous, was a bit of fear , of course , it was a big responsibility . I was afraid of the comparison, or that people did not accept, but they accept very well and so loved at the reception of the project from there on I became more relaxed and I think that this first concert was fantastic.

How has been tour? Not only in Portugal, but also abroad? What essence brings different from the rest of the repertoire of Madredeus?
BN : The " Essence " brings a new string ensemble in which participates Luis Clode and therefore, this is a more erudite sound and intimate and my voice , my interpretation , which will also bring something new and these new variables make a reunion with the older repertoire , the theme was actually the 25 years of Madredeus . Began in 2012 and Pedro and Carlos wanted to choose a set of songs all the trajectory of the band and hence the name essence.

So what is your next step in terms of music and career?
BN: Right now I really want to finish my course, since I'm with Madredeus has stop, well not quite. But I intend to finish it, the course of jazz singing at the Academy of Music and might want to refine the classical technique, now there is this return with another maturity. I also have a quartet with Jorge Moniz , Luis Barrigas and Mario Franco, I play in the " Big Band " of Barreiro and I am in several jazz formations . My big dream would be to launch a musical project with my songs , my ideas .

And Madredeus ?
BN : Madredeus are still on the road , going to Brazil this month and by the end of the year we have more dates in other countries . Let's see what follows there are ideas to do other things , new songs for a new CD and we are working towards it .

How did you get accepted in the band?
BN : It was the most unexpected way . I knew they were doing auditions through a conductor I worked with at the time in a choir , who told me that he thought I was match . I never thought I'd get it, but I decided to try anyway, there were many people and it is a matter of luck and I have a lot to thank for.
