The sunken city

Written by

It is an emerging city by mixing the old with the modern. The old and the new. It is Aveiro, renewed and graceful.

That day when I got off the train to the platform, a soft wind blew through the narrow entrance to the station , I grabbed the backpack and went out stubbornly against the breeze, at arrival I almost died of disappointment. Waiting for me was a street like any other. Where was the magic of water corridors that surround the city? I asked. Miss, is not here, follow your nose. Your skin will feel the salty sea on the air. So I did. After a while there it was as if waiting for me the river walking through the buildings . The morning light insisted on blind me with its piercing brightness. The sun rays were punctuated by the incessant passage of  Moliceiro boats that instead of salt they bring tourists and curious. I do the same. I went on board of this apparently narrow and very colorful vessel, so fragile it seems that it will break into pieces. I sit down and let it guide me. The Venice of the South they call it. Maybe. To me it seems much more graceful and less smelly. Our journey begins slowly to the uninterrupted sound of the engine that climbs up towards the lagoon with its artificial wet terraces ready for drying that will be turn into salt. The breeze gradually becomes a more cold and refreshing wind. We are closer to the sea. Our presence disturbs many birds that soar in an uproar. It is time to return. More is waiting for me yet.

Upon returning to grown, a time to use other means of transport, in accordance with this smoothly city. The bicycle. There are many at our disposal. The day is so beautiful. I drive the wheels that will follow a pre-defined roadmap that I mentally prepared yesterday. A dozens of small colored faces in a square greet me. There are several into one, right in front id the theater and City Hall of Aveiro. I follow the sidewalk and see richly decorated buildings. Some seem inspired by art deco. In the spaces left blank tiles stand with complex diagrams that grace the centennial walls. Again I ride up to the Millennium. It's like an architectural duel on one hand, the Cathedral, the other the Convent of Jesus. Which is the most beautiful and impressive one? It is up to you.

At first Aveiro seems like all the others, but it is not. The old blends with new. Here I am in the university campus. The college that will make me a doctor. I reached a new world. Where the imagination has limits imposed by relentless reasoning. It is one of the most advanced educational institutions of the country in terms of new technologies. That's why I'm here looking at the future shape of a diploma. Innovation is in the air. I turn to the central office to fill out forms that will make me a student. The queue is dense. Never mind, I have all the time in the world. Now I am adult. I feel a pain in my stomach. I recently left behind my comfort, my niche, my mom's lap. Enough, sorrows do not pay debts. I look around I see mirrors of my face anxious and confident at the same time, as I imagined, the future is now.
