The sovereign's favorite

It is situated in the center of Portugal and owes its existence to its thermal qualities.

Caldas da Rainha was born at the expense of its stench. It is the purest of truths. It's a town that owes its name to a Portuguese Queen Dona Leonor, who discovered its sulphurous thermal by chance according to legend, in the fifteen century. Since then, the city gained a royal status that grow up over time until the present days in the form of a thermal hospital surrounded by a bucolic park, with the name of another sovereign, Dom Carlos I . Another of the curiosities left by her majesty, is the Church of Our Lady of Pópulo, erected to save the souls of the sick, guarded by zealous gargoyles, has within a very interesting set of tiles of Moorish-inspired. Currently, in addition to this area of physical and spiritual healing, there are many buildings inspired by Art Nouveau in its swarming arterial roads, due to the enrichment of the bourgeoisie over time.

Caldas da Rainha is also known for been the home of an artist, Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro, who started a faience factory in the late nineteenth century, becoming one of the largest and most emblematic references in terms of pottery from all over the country. Incidentally, one of his pieces he created is one of the ex-libris of any self-respecting Portuguese tavern and symbol of the Portuguese people, for sure, the famous Zé Povinho. The success of this potter, journalist and man of the arts, was mainly due to the fact that his potteries are a scathing criticism of the social manners and politics of his time. Reminds you of something? Well, that is it! Continuing, Caldas da Rainha continues to this day to keep that potter legacy, fruit of the excellent quality of its clay abundant in the region. The irreverence is another characteristic of this city; a good example is the daily market of fruit and vegetables, in the center next to the town hall. This is a true festival of colors, aromas, flavors and screams that remains active for almost two hundred years. The tradition is so strong and powerful that the spaces occupied by stallholders are designed in the very gravelly of the Republic Square; I guarantee that there is a bit of everything and something for everyone. Not to be missed are the delights of the local sweets and do not worry about the consequences; you are in a city that heals all ills that this kind of sin will bring. Another of the places we should visit is the Museum of Jose Malhoa, this space inspires calmness and serenity and interior celebrates the work of one of the greatest artists of our country. That is to say: Long lives the Queen! Hurray.
