José abel manta

The graphic work of one of the best national cartoonists.

João Abel Manta is perhaps a name that does not say much too many people, even in the most intellectual circles, now, if you search this name in Google you easily reach the cartoons and there will be a series of ahhhhh of recognition of the work of this remarkable caricaturist. Rarely we do speak of this noble art of showing with fine humor and a certain irony some of the most remarkable events of a society, in just half a dozen strokes, particularly in the Portugal before and after April 25th, 1974. This book is about his graphic work traces this trajectory through images of his career, not only as a cartoonist, but also as an illustrator and artist. Highlight in particular, cartoons about Salazar and the fierce social criticism he addresses to the New State. It is especially a great work, not so much to be read, but to be veneered and reflected, which mainly serves to remind us of how we got here as a nation and who were these anonymous heroes who defended freedom at any cost, even with their own life . Good reading.

The conceptualist of the physical

João Queiroz explores the language of the physical body in his artwork. A representation of the elements conceptualized in various forms that materialize in his canvas.

One feature of his work is to explore the landscape.
João Queiroz: It's the beginning of the possibility of a unique theme. Generate various forms of representation and the elements that are obviously in this subject, as the landscape for example. It is able to constantly evolve somehow and find different things.

In the day-to-day you go looking these landscapes?
JQ: No, I can usually drawing only from memoire and then build in my own studio these relationships. No need of visiting sites.

You address this question of the physical in your work.
JQ: Of the body.

What is the creative process for the physical body that you speak in your work?
JQ: The physical body why? When you are doing the work, in the landscape there are relationships that are present in contemplation which are also a mirror of our body, there are the high, the low, the left, the right and imagine that you can get in some places over others. It all has to do with the body. All this game can also be made in the representation, not only abroad, but also that the relationship of this exterior with what happens in us.

The new agroforesty bank

A Portuguese company, a result of a spin -off of the University of Coimbra (UC), aims to be a bank of genetic agroforestry.

The idea arose in order to " increase production and improve the quality of national wine and oil, making them more competitive in international markets, and preserve endangered varieties and varieties relevant national (Galician)," revealed the university.

The new technology affixed in vitro culture methods (cloning techniques) for the preservation and propagation of plants, much faster and more efficient than conventional ones. "Let's not only ensure the production of high quality plant plants, but primarily to ensure the reduction of production costs for incubators / farmers associated with the elimination of pests or diseases, and improve their productivity, enhancing the domestic and stimulating the Portuguese economy with more competitive products, also worldwide, "said the founders of the QualityPlant - Research and Production in Plant Biotechnology Ltd, Elisa Figueiredo and Monica Zuzarte.

The techniques thus guarantee the uniformity of plant genetics and leads to a large number of species of higher quality within a relatively short time. Therefore , this technology will " overcome several limitations of conventional propagation ( cuttings and seed), including the lengthy and unsuccessful process of rooting in vegetative propagation by cuttings ( egg , olive and citrus crops ) , the contamination of many species by pathogens ( citrus sad virus , black rot of the vine , the olive tuberculosis , among others) and need large space ( eg tree species ), "explain the researchers from UC . On the other hand, the preservation of national germplasm varieties is an economic potential, innovative and want this to be the great asset of the newly created company.

A journey to the center of the volcano

Come along to the town of San Vicente and find a nice surprise.

How many of us read the "A journey to the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne ? And dreamed of the feats of fearless explorers , true to themselves, homeless adventurers , always attentive to all the dangers lurking at every step of an odyssey into the unknown ? All, I think. Well , real life has nothing to do it ! But to not disappoint even the most unsuspecting , I will relate a journey through the bowels of a volcano that enclose also wonders without equal.

The journey begins outside, in a lush mountainous block in which one sees a building that almost merges with the landscape and that welcome us to the caves of São Vicente . Nature unfolds in many shapes and colors that regale the eye , but the tunnel awaits us and the adventure begins ... The darkness momentary motivated by the scarcity of natural light is quickly replaced by a dense rock formation that is intersected by a small passage that we travel instinctively. We followed the track of the guide that will set a gradual compass revealing the mysteries of cooled lava over thousands of years , at a time when major eruptions were fought by the cool waters of the oceans and the strong winds. Of those Dantesque hells, remains the gray shafts paralyzed in time, which now glide small streams of water in a refreshing environment. But life in the depths of an extinct volcano also happens even surrounded by tubes of wrinkled rock and thanks to strategically placed focus, are born green plants , whose leaves caress the light in search of the much needed comfort to its survival. In Zigzag little by little we discover the chamber of desires with its volcanic stalactites , which literally dripping lava solidified over the millennia. The volcanic convulsions generously left a trail of channels and the galleries where successive small lakes of a crystal clear emerald water and sculptural mounds of cooled lava thru a distance of over 1000 meters long and when you least expect the odyssey ends and we stopped been explorers, to became mere mortals again.

At your measure

A program air by the theme channel SIC woman.

It is a program with about 15 minutes done at the measure of the various types of women, including the pregnant ones. It is a tastefully done and very pleasant TV format, the proposals in terms of makeup, or clothing are from my point of view very sensible and simple to compose. I like the part where we "discovered "the beauty secrets of some familiar faces from Lisbon society, just wish they expanded the range of personalities, because they always end up being the same. The section dedicated gastronomy, could be a little less refined in terms of ingredients, are light in flavor and calories, but heavy on the pocket. The choice of the hostess, Raquel Strada, could not have been better; she is young, beautiful and friendly, to our measure.

Goes fair and assure

Beatriz Nunes is a versatile singer who unfolds her voice into different types of music recordings. A balanced journey that she's been building and whose future is expected to be bright, taking into account that she is the new singer in her own right of one of the most iconic bands of the Portuguese music scene, Madredeus.

Your musical registration is erudite; however, you moved by other types of sounds like jazz.
Beatriz Nunes: I am a restless soul, I have many and very different tastes. I began by studying classical music and singing and came to a certain point I felt that was not enough and went looking for jazz , which was something different , but never stopped to shed erudite . Continued simultaneously and this had ramifications for light music and the "world music ". It is true that I have very different tastes.

What brought you jazz that classical music had not vocally?
BN: That question is very pertinent in academics terms I felt that classical music or the learning that I was doing at the time was a Russian pedagogy methodology very conservative, although I had a very good teacher. Jazz has another freedom that I needed and helped me with classical music. In the background are interlinked, the rigor of the scholar with the freedom of jazz.

Tell me then about "bad blood", which is another aspect completely different in musical terms. Why that project?
BN: I really like challenges. The "bad blood" was led by a person whom I care about, a great friend of mine, whom I also recognize an enormous talent, the poet Nuno Moura. He has edited books and won a revelation award a few years ago. At the time he challenged me, it is now more than 3 years, for a different work more underground with a sound almost conceptual. Music meets the word, rather than the opposite. It was amusing to dress a character to carry out the project that was presented live and where I even dress a blonde wig. I really enjoyed it, because I have something of an actress in me.

Yes, but your performance was not only vocal also took part of the project in melodic terms.
BN: Yes, there are two songs which I participated, one of them I did it when I was very young from one of the poems of Nuno. When I was nine I liked to grab books and make music from the poems and made the "congratulations Amalia". I always had this song, recorded it and later Nuno told me to use it now with arrangements. It is a very personal project.

The polar star district

It is a novel by Francisco Moita Flores.

It is a raw story of a reality that we keep tucked away on the fringes of our daily country of gentle manners, which ultimately we are not; it is life in razor's edge of the Polar Star district, in Lisbon. I do not feel comfortable saying that this is a detective novel, because it is not, is a more the style of a villain gender, after all, they are the main characters of this book, Diana's gang. I like unabashedly writing of Francisco Moita Flores, in linguistic terms, the slang that he uses often, which puts us right in the center of this underworld made of complicity built at the expense of human misery. I also appreciate the way that through the dialogues the writer gradually builds the portrait of these young people led by a woman, also something very unusual in the genre. The adaptation of this book is in cinema theaters , but I always prefer to read first and then watch the movie and have the usual disappointments , although in this case it is almost hard this will happen due to the nature of the writing itself , which leads us to an almost cinematic script because it is so visual. I leave the end to you, read it or watch it in the cinema; after all we are also a world of fables. Have a nice read.

Josefining

Filipa Julio decided to recreate a very special pair of shoes, the delight of several generations of women, the ballerinas. The results are Josephina's, a deserved tribute to her grandmother, who currently won huge acceptance with the Portuguese female public and across borders.

The obvious question is how a person connected to an area such as architecture decides to make shoes?
Filipa Julio: It runs in the family because of my grandfather is a retired shoemaker and my father used to helped him as a kid and so the shoes have always been in my life . I did the course in architecture, because I always liked it and what I still do and this gave me an education that helps a lot in terms of method, the notion of scale, detail and learn to work with a continuous thread. It's a great baggage for this project that appeared suddenly, I cannot say that since girl had idea to make a line of shoes, far from it, nor was linked to the footwear industry, I think it came naturally. Then I always had difficulty in finding something I liked in terms of shoes. It is those ideas that go through a person's head from time to time. I began to share the idea with friends, they in turn encouraged me a lot, and then enter in a contest of ideas and Josephina's began to grow.

Why you decided to adapt the ballerinas and give them the name of Josephina's? Why this particular model and not another type of footwear?
FJ: I thought of this model, because it was something you see a lot in the market, but not the way I liked. I enjoy the classic model and basic adjustable for both the girls, and for adult women. I also thought it was a type of shoe very comfortable, whether the person walks by foot or in public transport and adapted themselves to the city or other means and with it we can do a thousand and one things. Then I noticed that there was not a type of shoe that was easily found in the market and decided I liked to go to a place where there was a ballerina I liked enough to choose the color and probably the model , because the idea is to create several variations and associate a brand to this type of footwear .

So what has the Josephina's special, which distinguishes them from other ballerinas?
FJ: It has a leather sole, and the insole which allows the foot to breathe. The attention in the choice of materials is very cautious. The interior is 100 % cotton, and then has a cord that is adjustable. Usually ballerinas do not have that detail the Josephina's do , I like the ballet shoes that do this and are very practical , because often when people use it gains slack and hence can be tightened .
From the experience that you already have from the site, who are the Josefina women?
FJ: There are several. It is a shoe that fits the lives of almost all women.

The hiper-realistic

Alberto Santos expressed his emotions through pure realism, which almost makes us doubt that it is a painting. It is an artistic expression that involves his truth, an almost obsessive perfectionism that transforms the ordinary into a beautiful work of art.

When he began your love for the arts?
Alberto Santos: It was when I was a kid.

At what age?
AS: I'm committed to my art since my twenties. I started drawing in 1995, I was studying and then I left.

But why did you left school?
AS: On the differences I had with the art schools, art changed this conceptual image of the form, the concept of the image. Currently, my painting are from the last century, is not very well regarded, because I can use a photo that makes no difference, but for me this is just a reference. The scenario I 'm building is an intellectual possession of what I do and what will inspire me. For this painting inspired in a fado song, I used the birds of the island and there is a darkness that is inspired by the nineteenth century, by French painting, is very realistic. Also express the female figure, as individuality.

You describe your paintings as hyperrealism.
AS: Yes, I think it may be that hyper -realism, I'm close to photorealistic. Of course, previously they used models and were in full size. The hyper -realism begins in the 60s of the twentieth century, then became smaller, the idea is to be able to do something as realistic as a photo. And in Century / XVII XVIII were made realistic paintings without the use of photography.
